How to write a good AI prompt

Every prompt in this library follows the same handful of rules, and they work whether you use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or an open-source model. If you want to write your own, start here.

1. Give the model a role and a reader

"Act as a senior copy editor" and "for a reader who has no finance background" change the output more than any other single line. The role sets the standard; the reader sets the vocabulary.

2. Specify the output format

Tables, numbered lists, word limits, JSON β€” say exactly what you want back. Models are very good at following format instructions and very bad at guessing them.

3. Add constraints, especially negative ones

"No exclamation marks", "don't invent numbers", "don't rewrite sentences that are already fine". Banning the specific failure you keep seeing is faster than describing the ideal.

4. Paste the real material

A prompt with your actual resume, code, or data will beat a perfectly worded prompt with none of it. That's why most prompts here end with a paste-here block.

5. Ask for the thing you'll actually use

Want to accept or reject edits one by one? Ask for a table of edits, not a rewrite. Want to test ad angles? Ask for the angle label next to each variant. Design the output for the next step in your workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Are these prompts free to use?

Yes. Copy them, adapt them, use them commercially. No signup, no account.

Do the prompts work with ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

Yes. They're written as plain instructions, so they work in any modern chat model, including open-source models running locally. The "Open in ChatGPT" and "Open in Claude" buttons prefill the prompt for you.

What do the {{curly braces}} mean?

They're variables. When you open a prompt, each one becomes a text field. Fill it in and the final prompt updates live. Anything you leave blank stays as a visible placeholder so you can fill it in later.

Where are my favorites stored?

In your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I suggest a prompt?

The library is curated and grows regularly. Prompts are added when they're specific, produce reliably good output, and cover a use case people actually search for.
